At one New York health system an analysis uncovered opportunities to save costs in its care for spine patients, Cave Consulting Group said in a March 11 news release.

CCGroup analyzed the system’s low back pain treatment profitability under CMS’ ASM payment. The group used the CCGroup-CMS Innovator Project Database in their evaluation and looked at the system’s orthopedic and pain management data.

Utilization results found the health system has opportunities to improve performances on current patterns, Yuri Alexandrian, COO and CIO of CCGroup said in the release.

The analysis found that lower back pain severity level 1 episodes were being treated for $1,700 per case compared to the regional medial of $1,440 per episode. And there was a higher for pain management treatments of LBP episodes of severity level 1.

“The health system’s current utilization and quality results place them at-risk for potential repayment of Medicare Part B payments for LBP treatment under ASM,” Douglas Cave, PhD, said in the release.
