Gregory Zipfel, MD, head of the Taylor Family Department of Neurosurgery at WashU Medicine in St. Louis, has been elected president of the Society of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. Zipfel began his one-year term May 17 He has led the department since 2019 and also serves as neurosurgeon-in-chief at St. Louis-based Barnes-Jewish Hospital, according to a June 26 news release.
In addition, Dr. Zipfel treats patients at The Brain Tumor Center at Siteman Cancer Center. His research focuses on cerebrovascular disease, including stroke, brain aneurysms and the vascular contributors to dementia.
The Society of Neurological Surgeons is the world’s oldest neurosurgical society. All five chairs of WashU’s Taylor Family Department of Neurosurgery have served as president of the organization.
