Professor Geoffrey Raisman has died — 5 things to know

University College London has reported that George Raisman, PhD, famous for his role in helping a paralyzed man regain the ability to walk, has passed away.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. Dr. Raisman’s work focused on repairing and treating spinal cord injuries.

 

2. He was chair of neural regeneration at the University College London’s Institute of Neurology at Queen Square.

 

3. Earlier on in his career, Dr. Raisman proved that the adult brain and spinal cord responded to injuries by forming new connections.

 

4. In 1985, Dr. Raisman discovered the olfactory ensheathing cell, which he later used to regenerate nerve fibers and re-grow cells in paralyzed Polish firefighter Darek Fidyka’s spine.

 

5. Dr. Raisman passed away on January, 27, 2017.
