Mount Sinai’s Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance in New York CIty received a $3 million gift to create what it claims is the world’s first pediatric implanted neurostimulation program at the Charles Lazarus Children’s Abilities Center, according to a July 21 news release.
The program aims to help children with spinal cord injuries and cerebral palsy regain mobility using implanted devices previously tested only in adults. It will recruit two to six pediatric patients annually for surgery and therapy, develop remote rehabilitation tools and share findings worldwide.
Launching in September 2025, the program is funded by Ruth Lazarus and Michael Feldberg in memory of Charles Lazarus, Toys ‘R’ Us founder and children’s rehabilitation advocate.
