The Baton Rouge-based Spine Center of Louisiana has completed the city’s first Barricaid procedure, a technique designed to reduce the risk of reherniation following discectomy surgery.
Orthopedic spine surgeon Kevin McCarthy, MD, performed the procedure using the Barricaid annular closure device, which is implanted after removal of a herniated disc to seal the defect and lower the chance of recurrence, according to a Feb. 28 Linkedin post.
The Barricaid system is designed for patients at higher risk of reherniation and may support longer-term relief compared to standard discectomy alone.
The device is developed by Intrinsic Therapeutics and has been introduced in select centers across the U.S.
