Here are five points on brain tumors.
1. The majority of patients with brain tumors first visit their primary care physician with a list of their symptoms. Some of the symptoms include:
• Changes in mood, personality or ability to concentrate
• Headaches
• Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
• Muscle jerking or twitching
• Problems with memory
• Problems walking or balance
• Nausea or vomiting
2. If a physician deems the symptoms are indicative of a brain tumor, the physician will give the patient a physical exam and ask about personal and family health history.
3. Patients may have one or more tests including a neurological exam, MRI, CT or Angiogram.
4. Treatment for brain tumors depends on the tumor’s location, size, type/grade and the patient’s age and general health. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
5. A team of physicians including an oncologist, radiation oncologist and endocrinologist, provide care for patients with brain tumors.
