Researchers at New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System found patients with Lenke Type 5 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis who underwent posterior spinal fusion with posterior column osteotomies had similar overall correction to patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion without PCOs.
The results “highlight the importance of individualized surgical planning,” according to an Aug. 19 news release from the health system.
The systematic review, published Aug. 19 in Spine Deformity, analyzed outcomes from 2,108 patients across 35 previously published studies. Of the patients, 490 underwent posterior spinal fusion with a PCO, while 1,618 underwent posterior spinal fusion without a PCO.
Patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion with a PCO had an average correction of approximately 79% of their main spinal curve, compared with approximately 74% among patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion without a PCO. Both groups demonstrated improvements in spinal alignment and balance after surgery.
The findings suggest PCOs may be useful in select patients with larger or stiffer curves, the release said.
