Kenneth K. Hansraj, MD, the head of Spinal Surgery at New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitative Medicine told TelecomTV.com that he’s conducted several tests and seen that the degree at which a person looks down at their phone can cause some serious trouble.
“When your spine is in neutral position, the head weighs about 10 to 12 pounds. At 15 degrees forward, the neck experiences 27 pounds,” said Dr. Hansraj. “At 45 degrees, it experiences 49 pounds, and at 60 degrees it’s 60 pounds. That’s 60 pounds of weight stress on muscles and nerves that are meant to handle 10 to 12 pounds of stress, and that much load can do a lot of damage over time.”
