Cervical spinal fusion in 2025: 5 notes

Cervical fusion remains one of the most-performed cervical spine procedures done even as other techniques have gained prominence.

Five notes:

1. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusions have been the most commonly performed cervical spine procedures in the U.S. since 2015, according to the 2025 American Spine Registry. posterior cervical fusion was the second-most common.

2. Of all cervical spine surgery cases between 2015 and 2023, infections were the most common complications that arose, according to the American Spine Registry.

3. Medtronic is the most commonly used cervical component manufacturer in the U.S. Johnson & Johnson, Globus Medical and Stryker were also among the top manufacturers for cervical spine.

4. ACDFs at ASCs were associated with a 9.8% higher immediate procedure reimbursement, 17.2% higher patient out-of-pocket expenditures and 11.7% higher surgeon reimbursement compared to the HOPD, according to a study.5. Implants for ACDF can lead to long-term decreases in motion preservation, according to a study.
