CDC reports 1 in 4 senior women have osteoporosis: 5 notes

One-quarter of American women 65 or older have osteoporosis, according to a CDC study. The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics released the report, according to an article in HealthDay.

1. About 6 percent of men in the same age group have osteoporosis.

 

2. Although osteoporosis is found in older women, the onset of the bone weakening can start as early as 50s.

 

3. Researchers Anne Looker and Steven Frenk looked at federal government health survey data from 2005 to 2010.

 

4. The study found that more than 52 percent of senior women have osteopenia, the stage before osteoporosis.

 

5. Mexican-American seniors experienced the highest rate of osteoporosis and African Americans reported the lowest rate.
