2. Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center employs 14 physicians.
3. The TOPS System is an alternative to rigid fixation with a mechanical implant that is designed to allow two adjoining vertebrae to continue moving naturally after a decompression.
4. Patients in the study will either undergo surgery with the device or traditional lumbar spinal fusion, with a 67 percent chance of undergoing surgery with the TOPS System.
5. To participate in the study, patients must be experiencing persistent leg pain, more leg or buttock pain than back pain, severe pain after walking and/or pain that is reduced when sitting, bending or leaning over.
