American Association of Neurological Surgeons names president

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons elected E. Antonio Chiocca, MD, PhD, as president for the 2026-27 term.

Dr. Chiocca assumed the role following the organization’s annual scientific meeting held May 1-4 in San Antonio, according to a May 8 news release.

He serves as chair of neurosurgery for the integrated department of neurosurgery at Somerville, Mass.-based Mass General Brigham and executive director of the Center for Nervous System Tumors at the Boston-based Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute. He is also the Harvey W. Cushing and Dan Ponton professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School, also in Boston.

Dr. Chiocca previously served as neurosurgeon-in-chief and chair of the department of neurosurgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Earlier in his career, he held faculty positions at Massachusetts General Hospital and was founding chair of the department of neurological surgery at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus.

His research focuses on brain tumor biology and immune and genetic therapies for malignant gliomas. He also serves as principal investigator on multiple National Institutes of Health-funded research programs, according to the release.

Dr. Chiocca’s leadership team also includes Sepideh Amin-Hanjani, MD, as president-elect; Richard Byrne, MD, as vice president; Aviva Abosch, MD, PhD, as secretary; Joseph Cheng, MD, as treasurer; and E. Sander Connolly Jr., MD, as past president.
