ACDF accounts for 62% of cervical spine cases

More than 153,000 cervical spine procedures have been added to the American Spine Registry from 2015 to 2024, and the majority of them were anterior cervical discectomy and fusions, according to the ASR 2026 report.

The report, released Feb. 26, includes data on cervical and lumbar procedures and outcomes from 2015 to 2024.

10 key findings about cervical spine surgeries:

1. A total 153,601 cervical spine cases were included in the report. ACDFs accounted for 62.2% of those cases, and the second most common procedure was posterior fusion (24.5%).

2. Laminoplasty was the least commonly performed procedure, making up 0.4% of the cases.

3. Cervical disc replacement was done in 3.2% of registered cervical spine surgeries.

4. The three most common cervical spine diagnoses were spinal stenosis (58.5% of cervical cases), radiculopathy (42.9%) and myelopathy (36%).

5. Medtronic was the most commonly used devicemaker in cervical spine cases followed by DePuy Synthes and Globus Medical.

6. Anterior approaches were used in 81.4% of cervical fusions, and posterior approaches were used in 63.3% of non-fusion cervical cases.

7. Infections were the most common complications for cervical spine patients after 30 and 90 days post-surgery. Reoperation rates were 6.5% in cervical fusions, and revision rates were 4.9%.

8. Robotics have been used in 0.3% of cases in 2024, which is about flat compared to 2023.

9. The rate of computer use to assist cervical spine procedures hasn’t changed since 2022 with the rate staying at 1.1%.

10. Of 1,117 minimally invasive cervical spine procedures included in the report, mini open was the most common technique in 2024, representing 79.6% of cases.
