Akron (Ohio) Children's Hospital has opened a new operating room dedicated to child, adolescent and young adult spine surgeries

The hospital will become the second children's hospital in the country to use the nView s1 navigation system for providing three-dimensional images of the spine in real-time during procedures, according to an April 25 press release sent to Becker's

The nView system offers an 80 percent reduction in radiation exposure for patients and allows surgeons to navigate while seeing a true representation of the anatomy, according to the release.

The new machine will be used as a standard of care in idiopathic scoliosis cases, which represent about 80 percent of operating room volume.

The facility, which is 100 percent focused on spine surgery, is located in the former cardiac catheterization lab.

The $3.5 million project, and the purchase of the nView system, were supported by a donation from Mark and Cathy Clark of Akron, Ohio.
