In the first couple of months of 2026, the artificial disc landscape is shaking up with developments in the technology, new adoption and research.

1. Armen Khachatryan, MD, performed the first U.S. case with Dymicron’s Triadyme-C cervical disc replacement implant. The case is part of an Investigational Device Exemption clinical study. Triadyme-C is Dymicron’s flagship cervical disc and features a diamond-on-diamond articulating surface for durability.

2. Hillsdale (Mich.) Spine Center, part of Hillsdale Hospital, completed its first artificial disc replacement. Amritraj Loganathan, MD, completed Hillsdale’s first lumbar disc replacement, an alternative to spinal fusion. The hospital is the only one in the surrounding five counties to offer disc replacement.

3. A study in the January 2026 issue of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery found that AxioMed’s viscoelastic disc had lower wear rates compared to ball-and-socket artificial discs.

4. Dymicron added Peter Wehrly to its board of directors. Mr. Wehrly has extensive experience in the medtech industry including president of Premia Spine’s U.S. business, CEO of Vivex Biologics and multiple leadership roles within Medtronic.

5. The Activ-L lumbar artificial disc is back on the U.S. market under Highridge Medical, and its first cases under the company were completed in February. The disc is now available in a limited U.S. release.
