3 NIH grants awarded to neurosurgery researchers at Case Western Reserve, UH Case Medical Center: 3 highlights

The National Institutes of Health awarded Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, both in Cleveland, multi-year, multi-million dollar grants for Parkinson’s disease, stroke and brain cancer research.

Here are three highlights about the grants:

 

1. Barry J. Hoffer, MD, PhD, adjunct neurosurgery professor at Case Western Reserve received a three-year, $1 million grant for research about the use of gliptins for Parkinson’s treatment.

 

2. Yu Luo, PhD, assistant neurosurgery professor at Case Western Reserve, will lead the investigation to find new methods for regenerating stem cells in the brain following a stroke. Dr. Luo will use the five-year $1.7 million NIH grant.

 

3. Eli Bar, PhD, assistant neurosurgery professor at Case Western Reserve and UH Case Medical Center, received a five-year $1.8 million NIH grant for his research on brain tumor cells and their resistance to conventional therapy.
