Stryker, Medtronic & more: 16 device company acquisitions in 2021

Spine and orthopedic medtech companies jumped on multiple deals in 2021 to strengthen their portfolios and expand their scopes.

1. Smith+Nephew completed the acquisition of Integra LifeSciences’ extremity orthopedics business for $240 million.

2. Stryker acquired OrthoSensor, which focuses on digital musculoskeletal care and sensor technology.

3. DJO acquired Trilliant Surgical, a provider of foot and ankle orthopedic implants.

4. NuVasive acquired Simplify Medical in a multimillion dollar deal.

5, Musculoskeletal startup Hinge Health acquired Enso, a company that produces electric stimulation machines for back and joint pain.

6. Durham, N.C.-based medical technology company Bioventus has acquired rehabilitation solutions company Bioness for $45 million upfront consideration.

7. Alphatec received regulatory approval for its $116.9 million acquisition of EOS Imaging.

8. DJO acquired MedShape, which focuses on foot and ankle devices.

9. 7D Surgical has been acquired by SeaSpine for a reported $110 million.

10. DJO acquired Switzerland-based medical technology company Mathys AG Bettlach.

11. Bioventus has entered an agreement to acquire Misonix for $518 million in a cash-and-stock transaction.

12. Titan Medical Manufacturing, a developer of orthopedic implants, devices and instruments, has been acquired by Arch Medical Solutions.

13. Medtronic has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Intersect ENT for $1.1 billion.

14. Bioventus announced plans to acquire Israeli medtech company Cartiheal.

15. Stryker acquired Gauss Surgical, developer of the Triton artificial intelligence platform.

16. Synthes GMBH, Johnson & Johnson’s orthopedics company, has acquired 100 percent of OrthoSpin, an Israel-based robotics company.
