Traditionally, CoCr rods have been cut on the back table with a table mounted rod cutter which had necessitated extra steps in measuring, removing, cutting and reinserting the rod into the wound and construct, according to an SSI news release.
“With SSI’s engineering capabilities, we have been able through design and metallurgic expertise, to solve the problem and now have a rod cutting device designed to cut this very strong CoCr rod material in-situ, where it is needed,” said Chris Zorn, vice president of SSI, in the release. “The cutter saves the patient and surgeon time and leaves the rod with a clean cut, best approximating the optimal length for the construct.”
Russell P. Holmes, president of SSI, added, “This is the first product of its kind on the market today, and is a result of a significant investments in basic research and intense problem solving in our constant attempt to develop products that help simplify the surgical experience for all parties; surgeon, OR team and patients,” according to the release.
