Three insights:
1. The trial rod consists of flexible silicone with a nitinol wire center. When autoclaved, the rod relaxes and returns to its original shape.
2. It is designed with nickel titanium, which provides strength and flexibility for use in shape memory alloy assisted correction rods for scoliosis and other lumbar fixation procedures.
3. The nitinol rod is malleable at low temperatures and can return to a preconfigured shape higher than its activation temperature, which allows it to be re-used after autoclaving.
