Ohio State Wexner Medical Center 1st in state to use 3D hologram for joint replacement

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus was the first in the state to perform a shoulder replacement surgery with mixed reality 3D hologram technology.

Orthopedic surgeon Greg Cvetanovich, MD, performed the surgery with Stryker’s Blueprint Mixed Reality, according to an April 7 news release. The headset lets surgeons see a patient’s preoperative plan as a 3D hologram, and it provides real-time visualization of the implant’s position.

“Technology like mixed reality gives us an opportunity to significantly reduce variability in the way surgery is performed, which can help reduce complications and improve overall patient outcomes,” Dr. Cvetanovich said.

Ohio State Wexner Medical Center is one of 15 sites using the technology.
