Five things to know:
1. Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, MD, PhD, performed the operation using Blueprint OR Visualization Mixed Reality software, which provided a holographic view of the patient’s preoperative plan.
2. The real-time visualization is intended to help surgeons “precisely tailor shoulder joint replacement procedures to the unique needs and anatomy of their patients,” thereby reducing variability in outcomes, said Wright Medical President and CEO Robert Palmisano.
3. Surgeons can use hand gestures and voice commands to adjust the positioning of 3D models displayed by the Mixed Reality application.
4. The Mixed Reality software is Wright Medical’s newest Blueprint offering. Artificial intelligence, case planning optimization and mixed reality modules for medical education will be integrated in the future.
5. Both Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo and Mayo Clinic have financial interest in Wright Medical.
