Hip Resurfacing Loses Support From California Technology Assessment Forum

The California Technology Assessment Forum recently decided to rescind its support for hip resurfacing due to the high number of complications and failures associated with the procedure as reported by overseas orthopedic registries, according to a report from the New York Times.

The group, which his financed by Blue Shield of California released a position in support of the procedure last year. However, reports of high failure rates from English and Australian databases prompted a reversal of this decision.

Some surgeons performing hip resurfacing argue that studies often overlook the benefits of hip resurfacing that could make it worthwhile for some patient population groups. According to the report, Blue Shield of California will continue covering hip resurfacing for appropriate patients.
