Globus Medical earned FDA clearance for Excelsius XR, an augmented reality navigation headset, CEO Keith Pfeil said in an Aug. 7 earnings call.
Excelsius XR will work with ExcelsiusHub and ExcelsiusGPS and project 2D data and 3D models to let surgeons look at the patient and navigation data simultaneously, Mr. Pfeil said, as transcribed by Seeking Alpha. It will also have instrument tracking capabilities for screw placement and interbody fusion devices.
“As we think about XR, the value proposition is line of sight for the surgeon, surgeon control [and] allowing them to keep their eyes on the patient,” Mr. Pfeil said in the earnings call. “The surgeon will be able to have hand tracking … so they’re not going to have to touch a screen. As we think about XR, what we’re looking to do is pair that with our ExcelsiusHub and Excelsius3D or pairing it with ExcelsiusGPS. But for now, we’re focused on ExcelsiusHub with XR and Excelsius3D. We think that would be the best navigation package out there in the market, and we’re excited to move it forward.”
Mr. Pfeil said he expects to bring Excelsius XR to surgeons in the coming months.
