Currently, the shoulder joint represents 60 percent of the total European small joint implant market, according to the report. In the shoulder segment, the largest growth opportunities are in stemless shoulder implants and reverse implants. The report predicts that as motion preserving implant technology improves, more patients will elect to undergo arthroplasty at a younger age, thus promoting market growth.

Ankle arthroplasty devices also show the potential for strong growth, especially as mobile-bearing ankle implants have become more popular in Europe than fixed bearing implants. The report predicts an average of 11 percent annual growth in the ankle arthroplasty device market through 2016, due to increased positive clinical evidence and patient satisfaction.
