Here’s what you need to know:

1. Dr. Favorito has performed 50 shoulder replacements using the stepped socket to date. His study looked at the first 22 of them who had the surgery between 2011 and 2013, and had two years of follow-up.

2. Dr. Favorito said using the devices “provided important gains in quality of life and initial results are similar to shoulder replacements in patients who do not have bone loss.”

3. Dr. Favorito urges patients with shoulder pain to see a specialist as soon as possible, because although initial results are favorable, the long term effects of surgeries performed with the socket are unknown.

“Up to 15 to 20 percent of patients have bone loss that needs management,” he said. “The longer you wait, the more damage there will be and the more limited your options for relief.”
