Dr. Liu Zhongjun Uses 3-D Printing to Create Personalized Spinal Implants

Physicians and device companies are using 3-D printing technology increasingly to develop spinal implants fitted to a patient’s exact anatomical needs, according to an Engineering.com report.

Liu Zhongjun, MD, of Peking University Medical and Health Center in Beijing, has been using an Electron Beam Melting 3-D printer for creating dozens of orthopedic implants. The technology can print specific structures and is capable of producing porous metal.

Dr. Zhongjun is in the process of getting approval from Chinese health authorities to distribute his titanium implants throughout the country.
