Caregivers typically rotate patients from supine to prone positions to optimize pulmonary mechanics and improve blood oxygenation and migration. Many patients with severe COVID-19 symptoms in the ICU are at high risk of developing additional complications, and proning patients twice daily may require multiple staff members.
The typical process of proning patients has been complicated during the pandemic because staff are in short supply; many are required to treat front-line patients, and hospitals are also experiencing shortages as staff members contract the virus.
Bone Foam realized these challenges and developed Prone Foam to protect at-risk patients and offload hospital staff. Prone Foam, made of a soft, open cell foam, can be used to position COVID-19 and acute respiratory disease syndrome patients.
