Artificial nose device helps neurosurgeons detect cancer during surgery

Scientists at Tampere University in Finland developed an artificial nose that helps neurosurgeons identify and remove cancerous tissue during surgery, reports Science Daily.

Three things to know:

1. The device features an electric knife that releases flue gases from the tissue, using a machine learning system to analyze it.

2. By analyzing the surgical smoke, the device can differentiate between malignant tissue and healthy tissue.

3. The scientists hope that the device will progress to enable more precise excision of tumors to stop cancer spreading and save healthy tissue.
