Here are seven things to know:

1. Arlington Orthopedic Associates and Baylor Orthopedic and Spine Hospital are the only centers in Texas participating in the SUN trial, and are two of the 10 U.S. centers participating.

2. The patients enrolled in the trial suffer from serious knee pain caused by injured or deteriorated meniscuses.

3. NUsurface Meniscus Implants have been inserted into the patients’ knees so that the product’s safety and effectiveness may be assessed during and after six weeks of rehabilitation.

4. Over 1 million partial meniscectomies are performed in the U.S. every year, a number evenly stacked with the combined amount of hip and knee replacements that take place per year. Unfortunately, most treatments fail to fully relieve patients’ knee pain.

5. Physicians using the implant have high hopes that the NUsurface Meniscus Implants will keep patients pain-free on a long-term basis.

6. The implant has been used in Europe under CE since 2008 and in Israel since 2011.
