Ellipse Technologies‘ MAGEC System designed as a noninvasive alternative treatment for early onset scoliosis was approved for marketing in Europe. The system includes remote lengthening of the spine, so physicians can modify the length of the rod and force applied to the spine throughout the implanted period as the patient responds to therapy.

Medtronic recently received FDA clearance for its TSRH Spinal System, designed to treat patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The system includes pedicle screws for posterior surgery.

Medtronic also received the first FDA clearance in the Pediatric AIS Category for its CD Horizon Spinal System late last year. The system is designed for use in the thoracolumbar spine and can treat patients with deformity and spinal trauma.

Orthofix released the Firebird pedicle screw system, which is designed for treating patients with conditions such as scoliosis and kyphosis. The device is designed for quick intraoperative assembly and disassembly.

Zimmer Holdings received additional FDA clearance for its proprietary Universal Clamp Spinal Fixation System for use with idiopathic and neuromuscular scoliosis. The system can be used in conjunction with spinal fusion surgery.
