Medtronic names chief medical officer of robotic, digital technologies

Medical devicemaker Medtronic appointed James Porter, MD, as chief medical officer of robotic surgical technologies and digital technologies within the company’s surgical business.

Dr. Porter is a urologic surgeon who specializes in prostate, kidney cancer and urinary constructive procedures, according to a Sept. 11 news release from the company. 

In the role, Dr. Porter will be tasked with driving robotic and digital innovation, leading the strategic direction of clinical evidence plans and boosting physician and society engagement. 

Dr. Porter has performed more than 5,000 robotic-assisted procedures. 

He previously served as medical director of robotic surgery at Providence Swedish in Seattle and will continue to practice at Providence Swedish on a part-time basis, the release said.
