California children’s hospital acquires $1.5M spinal robot

MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach (Calif.) is reportedly the first pediatric hospital in the state to acquire the ExcelsiusGPS robotic system for spine surgery, Cerritos Community News reports.

Developed by Globus Medical, ExcelsiusGPS combines a robotic arm with navigation to improve accuracy in the placement of pedicle screws and reduce radiation exposure.

More than 20,000 patients worldwide have been treated with the robot, which is priced at about $1.5 million.

Screw placement  has been “one of the strongest tools” to correct deformities in pediatric spine surgery,” said Peter Hahn, MD, pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Miller Children’s & Women’s.

ExcelsiusGPS supports screw placement in various approaches, including posterior cervical, posterior thoracic sacroiliac and posterior lumbar.
