Alabama hospital to integrate Mako robot

Robotics

Alabaster, Ala.-based Shelby Baptist Medical Center added the Mako robot system to assist in knee and hip procedures, according to an Oct. 16 report by ABC affiliate WBMA.

The hospital received the robot in October and will offer robot-assisted total knee, partial knee and total hip surgeries.

The system will provide surgeons with a 3D image of a patient's knee or hip, assisting in the development of personalized plans for each patient. The robot also will assist surgeons with implant placements.

The Mako robot is designed to improve implant precision and accuracy, leading to faster recovery times and less pain for patients, the report said.
