The state secured the “worst” title for several reasons — for one, physicians in the area had among the highest burnout rates in the country, according to the report.
In addition, residents have high rates of smoking (21%) and obesity (41%). Malpractice premiums in the state are also among the highest in the nation.
West Virginia also has low physician compensation and low life expectancy. However, the cost of living is 9% lower than the national average.
In contrast, Wisconsin was named the best state for physicians to practice in.
