Just two months ago, University of Iowa Health Care opened its new orthopedic-focused hospital in North Liberty. Now, its chair is stepping down.

J. Lawrence Marsh, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, has served as department chair since 2013, when he stepped into the role on an interim basis, according to a June 25 report from The Gazette.

Dr. Marsh officially became department chair in 2014 after joining the health system in 1987. He spent 15 years as the department’s residency program director before becoming chair and led surgical services at UIHC for six years.

He will step down from his post in January, but “plans to remain active in clinical coverage at some capacity,” officials with the university told The Gazette.

“Dr. Marsh has built a world-class orthopedics program here at Iowa while also leading the vision and planning behind a world-class facility that now serves as home to our orthopedic services — offering Iowans increased access to top-notch care and expertise,” UIHC Vice President for Medical Affairs and Carver College of Medicine Dean Denise Jamieson told The Gazette.

UI’s new 469,000-square-foot orthopedic hospital, which opened in April, provides spine, orthopedic, sports medicine care and more for patients in eastern Iowa and beyond.
