In March, the International Olympic Committee tapped primary care practitioner and sports medicine specialist Robin Mitchell, MD, as chair of the Health, Medicine and Science Commission.

The IOC and its members are responsible for supporting all Summer and Winter Olympic games, including the Youth and Special Olympics games.

The organization aims to “strengthen the integrity of sport and support clean athletes and other sports organizations,” according to the IOC website.

Currently, two physicians from around the world serve on the IOC’s board of directors and as members.

Dr. Mitchell, a member of the board of directors, is responsible for promoting the IOC’s interests in the field of sports sciences through education, research and partnerships. He represents the country of Fiji.

Julio Maglione, MD, an odontologist from Uruguay, is also a former Olympic medalist in swimming. He first joined the IOC as a member in 1996, and has held several roles within the organization.
