IOC taps health and medicine chair

The International Olympic Committee has named sports medicine specialist Robin Mitchell, MD, as chair of the health, medicine and science commission. 

Dr. Mitchell will be responsible for promoting the IOC’s interests in the field of sports sciences through education, research and partnerships, according to a March 17 news release. 

Dr. Mitchell stepped into the role on Jan. 1, succeeding Uğur Erdener, who had led the IOC Medical and Scientific Commission since 2014.

Dr. Mitchell first joined the Oceania National Olympic Committee as a member, before becoming president in 2009. He is a primary care practitioner, sports medicine specialist and was a team physician for Fiji at the Olympic games. 

He has also served as a member of the World Athletics Commission, the International Hockey Federation and the Association of National Olympic Committees’ Medical Commission.
