Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty vs. hemiarthroplasty for humerus fractures in geriatric patients: 3 notes

Using reverse total shoulder arthroplasty to treat acute proximal humerus fractures in geriatric patients may lead to improved short- and medium-term outcomes compared with hemiarthroplasty, according to a study in The Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma.

Here are three things to know:

1. The meta-analysis comprised 15 studies featuring 913 patients, of which 421 were treated with RSA and 492 were treated with HA.

2. Compared with HA, the RSA group had significantly improved pain scores, outcome scores and forward flexion. Patients who underwent HA surgery had a significantly greater reoperation risk. 

3. There were no differences between the groups in external rotation or deep infection rates.
