In private practice for two decades and chief of staff at Shriners Hospital for Children, headquartered in Tampa, for two more, Dr. Stevens also served as the sports physician for two local high schools.
In 1968, Dr. Stevens served as board chairman of the Central Kentucky Blood Center, of which he was a founding member. He also served as president of the Fayette County Medical Society and taught at Lexington-based University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
The retired orthopedic surgeon served 16 years on the Urban County Council. During his tenure, Dr. Stevens helped institute the smoking ban in indoor places in Lexington.
