The FDA has cleared two magnesium-based bone graft substitutes from Bone Solutions, for pediatric use in patients 6 years and older.

The products, Mg Osteocrete and Mg Osteoinject, are designed to treat bone voids or defects resulting from trauma, tumors or cysts in the extremities or pelvis. Mg Osteoinject is also used in the outpatient Sclerograft procedure for unicameral bone cysts, according to an Oct. 21 news release from the medical device company.

The grafts are formulated with magnesium oxide and phosphate compounds to promote bone regeneration and osteoblast activity. The materials are moldable or injectable after mixing and are radiopaque for use in surgical settings.
