Dr. Shields is an orthopedic consultant to the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in Orange and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey, Calif. He is a past president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and was named “Mr. Sports Medicine” by the AOSSM in 2006. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American College of Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Association of North America.
Dr. Shields is the founder of the Team HEAL Foundation, which provides certified athletic trainers and related services to athletes at participating high schools. He has facilitated more than 200 lectures.
Dr. Shields earned his medical degree at Creighton University in Omaha. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at LAC+University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles. He completed his sports medicine fellowship at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic.
