Orthopedic surgeon pleads guilty to illegally prescribing oxycodone, Percocet — 4 details

A retired orthopedic surgeon based in Johnstown, Pa., pleaded guilty to healthcare fraud and unlawfully dispensing pain medications, WJAC TV reports.

Here’s what you should know:

1. Investigators said Peter James Ridella, MD, illegally prescribed oxycodone and Percocet and distributed more than 24,000 milligrams of controlled substances.

2. He was charged with submitting fraudulent claims to Highmark Insurance to cover costs for the illegal prescriptions.

3. Dr. Ridella entered a guilty plea in federal court June 29. The physician’s sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 31.

4. Dr. Ridella’s charges were part of a nationwide crackdown on healthcare fraud.
