Orthopedic surgeon leader to know: Dr. Robert E. Atkinson of Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii

Robert E. Atkinson, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii, a practice with offices in Honolulu and Hilo. He specializes in treating hand and upper extremity conditions, including nerve injuries, joint replacement and arthroscopic procedures.

In the Honolulu community, he serves as the chief of the University of Hawaii’s orthopedic residency program and the division chief of orthopedic surgery for the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. Dr. Atkinson also volunteers at various area hospitals, such as Shriners Hospitals for Children and Queen Emma Clinics. He has presented his research at hospitals and colleges around the world, as far as Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, China, and Toho University in Tokyo, Japan.

 

Dr. Atkinson earned his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University’s Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia. He went on to complete a residency in orthopedics at the New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery and a fellowship in hand surgery at the Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital.
