OrthAlign has expanded its Lantern hip platform to support posterior-based approaches in total hip arthroplasty, broadening the handheld navigation system’s use across all patient positions.
The Lantern system, which first launched for supine-positioned patients in 2023, will be commercially available for lateral-positioned patients in early 2026, according to a Dec. 16 news release.
The updated functionality enables surgeons to use the platform regardless of their approach preference.
The first clinical case using the posterior-based workflow was completed Dec. 16 by John McLaughlin, DO, an orthopedic surgeon at Cleveland Clinic.
Lantern provides real-time, imageless guidance for implant positioning and leg length restoration. OrthAlign said the portable platform is compatible with most implant systems and surgical approaches, and it offers a capital-free model suitable for hospitals and ASCs.
The update aims to improve access to surgical navigation without requiring large robotic systems.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
