Here are five key notes:

1. The organization was founded in 1989 as the Study and Application of Methods of Ilizarov — North America. It was named for Gavriil A. Ilizarov, MD, who pioneered limb reconstruction.

2. LLRS is an American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons specialty society and has a specialty day at the AAOS annual meeting focused on limb lengthening and reconstruction education and gives research grants and traveling fellowships.

3. LLRS sponsors the International Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society Congress to meet with colleagues from around the world in November.

4. The members share a common interest in the bone generation and soft tissue by distraction. Their practices aren’t necessarily limited to performing the Ilizarov procedure and areas of expertise include external fracture fixation, limb deformity correction, extremity lengthening and treating chronic infections.

5. Dr. Ilizarov developed the external fixation device for limb lengthening in the 1950s and it’s still in use today.
