On Oct. 29, Sparks Health System and the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for Sparks Regional Medical Center's Orthopedic and Spine Center in Fort Smith, Ark.
Here are five key points:
1. The orthopedic and spine center has been open for a few weeks. Orthopedic surgeon, John Harp, MD, said, " I'm quite impressed by the difference it has made. Our outcomes are significantly better and complication rates are lower."
2. Surgeons at the center utilize minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery and a cohesive treatment plan for its joint replacement patients.
3. Prior to surgery, a joint care coordinator leads patients in a presurgery class. During the class, patients can get answers about the surgery and learn how to best prepare for their recovery.
4. During the recovery process, patients work with a physical therapist before heading home. The therapist uses an actual model care to teach patients how to get into a car after surgery.
5. The new center has a variety of services such as community outreach seminars, an informative preop class for patients and family members, a step-by-step patient guidebook that explains surgery as well as exercise and therapy in a group setting among others.
