Bentonville students receive free surgical lesson — 6 takeaways

More than 200 high school students gathered to watch Chris Dougherty, MD, perform surgery live on stage, according to the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

Here are six takeaways:

 

1. Dr. Dougherty, an orthopedic surgeon in Bentonville, Ark., repaired an ACL in a leg from a cadaver.

 

2. His work was captured by a surgical camera and displayed on a big screen above the stage, giving students an up-close look at the inside of the leg and what the physician was doing to it.

3. The procedure lasted about 30 minutes.

 

4. Most of the attending students are enrolled in Bentonville High School’s sports medicine and medical professions classes.

 

5. The surgical demonstration was arranged by Arthrex and Midsouth Orthopedics.

 

6. Dr. Dougherty is the head physician for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and has performed at least 1,000 ACL surgeries during his career.
