Here are five things to know:
1. Steven Crenshaw, MD, the chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville, used the MAKO Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System to replace a patient’s right hip.
2. The patient suffered from a hip condition called cam impingement, a condition in which the femoral head is not round and cannot rotate smoothly.
3. Dr. Crenshaw explained MAKO technology enables physicians to place the components in the exact position in relation to the rest of a patient’s pelvis.
4. Baptist Jacksonville has been utilizing robotic technology to assist in knee replacements since 2012. The technology is only recently being used to assist in hip replacements.
5. Dr. Crenshaw stated the technology allows him to enhance his skills as a surgeon and is a step forward in the field of hip replacement surgery.
