Women have lower representation in orthopedic surgery than any other physician specialty, making up just 10% of the orthopedic workforce, according to the report.

By contrast, 23% of Premier Health’s orthopedic surgeons are women. Premier Health holds a weeklong summer externship program, which focuses on getting young women and minorities interested in the field.

In its first year in 2021, the student externship had just two students, while this year, it has 20.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
