Neal ElAttrache, MD, is set to perform elbow surgery on Gerrit Cole, a pitcher for the New York Yankees, on March 11 in Los Angeles.

Dr. ElAttrache will perform Tommy John surgery on Mr. Cole’s right elbow, according to a March 10 news release from mlb.com.

The team did not provide a timeline for Mr. Cole’s return, but pitchers undergoing Tommy John surgery typically need 12 to 18 months for a full recovery. The procedure will cause Mr. Cole to miss the entirety of the 2025 MLB season.

Mr. Cole experienced elbow discomfort after a game on March 6, which led to the initial round of imaging.

Last March, Mr. Cole experienced right elbow inflammation and edema, which caused him to miss the first few months of the 2024 MLB season.

Dr. ElAttrache is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles. He is also the head team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Rams.
